Language
English is considered the primary language of Mauritius however, most citizens are bilingual and many even trilingual.  Street signs are in English where most media relations and newspapers are in French.  Other languages typically spoken are Hindu, Creole and oriental languages.
     
   

Religion
Mauritius’s diverse population allows for a variety of practicing religions.   The dominant religions are Hindu, Catholic and Muslim.

Local Currency
Mauritian currency can only be obtained on the Island.  The monetary unit is the Mauritian ruppe (Rs) and 1 Euro = about 42 Rs.  You can exchange currency at many locations throughout the Island.  Most visitors choose to visit one of the three banks located at the airport.  Island hotels and banks, most often, also offer currency exchange.  In addition there are numerous ATM’s located throughout the Island and Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Dinners are accepted at most hotels, restaurants and shops. 

Banks are open in Mauritius Monday – Thursday 9:15am – 3:15 pm and Fridays 9:15 am – 3:30 pm.  A limited number of banks also open on Saturday mornings form 9:15 – 11:15.  Banks are also open to tourists at the International Airport upon their arrival. 

Health
Generally no immunizations are required for Mauritian visitors.  There are plenty of publically run medical facilities that offer good medical treatment.  Private Health Care is also available, but it can be costly if you are not insured.  Visitors may want to consider purchasing emergency evacuation insurance if they have a high risk medical condition.   Tourists arriving with medications must have with them valid medical prescriptions for any common drugs they are taking. 

Water Supply
Local water on the Island is generally considered to be clean.  However, it is best for tourists to boil the water before drinking, or to rely on bottles water which is available throughout the Island. 

Safety
The Island of Mauritius is generally considered safe as crime levels are fairly low.  Petty crime, generally theft can be a problem so you will want to make sure your valuables are secure.   It is also wise to be alert when using the Island’s ATM machines, as robberies are often reported at such locations.  Assaults and rapes do occur from time to time, but are not common.  Still, it is best to not travel alone, especially after dark.

Shopping
There are a variety of shopping experiences on the Island for Tourists.  From Duty free shops to large centers to the small boutiques with unique merchandise, there is something for everyone.  Shops are generally open on the Island Monday – Saturday from 9:30 am – 7:30 pm.  Some shops are also open on Sunday mornings. 

VAT
A Value added tax of 15% is added on to purchases on the Island including goods, services, dining and accommodations.

Electricity
